H&H Baby Namings - Naming and Welcoming Ceremonies in Gloucestershire & Bristol
Humanist Wedding and Partnership Ceremonies

Philippa and Hannah both take humanist wedding ceremonies as well as namings.

There is a surprising amount these two ceremonies have in common!  For example, they both include readings, writing promises, involving loved ones, personalising it all...

Unfortunately, due to the archaic nature of British marriage law, humanist weddings are not legally binding.  Many of the couples having a humanist weddings will have had a quiet register office ceremony in the days before to deal with the paperwork  but consider their humanist wedding to be their 'real' wedding.

However, there are some big advantages to humanist weddings having no legal status; there are no limitations on where or when you marry, nor official words that have to be included or automatic exclusions about what can't be involved.

Couples choose humanist weddings for a variety of reasons, for example:

  • they want to personalise the ceremony in a way you cannot with a civil or religious ceremony

  • they want the flexibility to say what they want e.g. to write their own vows, to involve their children or include something special like hand-fasting or a tradition from another country or culture

  • they want to hold their ceremony at a particular venue that is not licensed for weddings

  • they want to get married outside (not possibly under British marriage law) or in the evening

  • they have their chosen venue and date but the local registrar does not have the availability (an increasing problem)

  • the couple have roots here and overseas and they want to hold a ceremony in the UK for those who can't make their marriage abroad
